Kettle & Kiln is a small ceramics studio that makes tableware for everyday use: mugs, bowls, plates and teaware, thrown in batches of forty or fifty and fired twice.
How a piece is made
- Stoneware clay is thrown on the wheel and left to firm up overnight.
- The foot is trimmed and handles or spouts are added.
- A first, bisque firing hardens the clay so it can be handled.
- Each piece is dipped in glaze by hand, leaving the foot bare.
- A second firing at 1260 °C melts the glaze and vitrifies the clay.
From wheel to shelf takes about two weeks.
